One of My First Loves, Drawing!

As a teen in the late eighties, I was trying to find myself, and one of my favorite pass times was drawing. I grew up loving art. My sister Lita drew, my older brother John drew too. I even recall my sister sitting me down at the age of 7 years old, showing me how she could draw a girl.  Believe it or not, I still have that drawing! I fell in love with it, and kept it all these years. I guess seeing her love of art, encouraged me to love drawing too.

At 17 years old, I loved fashion and decided that I wanted to become a fashion designer. My designs would be called “Simply Gigi”. I wanted it so badly, that I made a fashion book of sorts. I decided to take it out today and look through it…

The book, I bought from the book store at the University of Guam a year later, to compile my drawings into…

I even describe each fashion and suggest where to where them or the feeling you have when you wore my fashions!

Just a few of the pages showing my designs…

The book has a little over 30 designs. It was fun to do and in fact, I think I bought some fashion pieces, cut, sewn, and put them together to help create them.

My grammar needed some work, but I was only 17… LOL

I even applied to The Art Institute of San Francisco! When I graduated, I got a call over the summer of 1989. They liked the work I turned in and wanted me to enroll for the Fall semester. I remember getting the call and them telling me about the school and what I was being offered. They even talked about financial aide, dorms, and the programs they had. I was thrilled and wanted so badly to go too.

I spoke with my parents the same day they called. But unfortunately, back then an airline ticket from Guam to the states was expensive, just as it is today.  So, my parents couldn’t afford to send me to San Francisco. I had to tell them the next day, when they called back, that we just couldn’t afford to get there. I was devastated, but I made the best of it and took classes at the University of Guam. No fashion designer classes were available, but there was Art 101, and Theater 101, I think even a Sewing course? But, it just didn’t work out that way and I studied Science and Biology instead, and eventually, Elementary Education…

To this day, I’m sure that if I was afforded the chance, things might’ve gone as I had planned or maybe not? Still, the love of drawing has always been there…

Here are a few of my doodles too!

Thank you for reading! ~ ggsdolls
